What is somatic coaching and why is it helpful for gifted people?

“Somatic coaching helps individuals who experience the world in intense ways resolve nervous system dysregulation so they can return to a deeply embodied and integrated state”.

So, what's somatic coaching? Let's start by explaining "somatic." It means relating to our bodies rather than just our thoughts. This special word comes from a Greek word, "soma," which means "the body of an organism."

Somatic coaching is all about our minds and bodies working together. A somatic coach pays close attention to how a person breathes, moves, and uses their body language. This helps them understand the person better and provides insight into how they can help support and guide them in the goals they are trying to reach.

Now, why is somatic coaching great for gifted people? Gifted folks experience the world in intense ways. They're motivated, love figuring things out, and ask lots of questions. They think deeply and often have high expectations for themselves. Also, they often hear they're smart, which makes them focus a lot on thinking. This can sometimes make them feel a bit out of balance. Somatic coaching helps bring their bodies back into the equation. People do best when their minds and bodies work together. This helps them connect better with others, know themselves better, and understand and speak up for what they need (emotion regulation). Somatic practices help gifted people feel more connected to themselves and others. For many gifted people, this is like finding a missing puzzle piece that makes them feel more complete.
